Oh Deer! Literally… Oh Deer 🦌

In Michigan, the word deer is something that we all know a little too well. I’m not talking about the deer you hunt in the fall with your family in the woods. I’m talking about the deer you accidentally hunt in the middle of the road on your way home to or from work with the front of your car. That kind of deer.

Around 50,000 deer accidents are reported each year in Michigan (1 in 80 people)

I am sure many of you reading this right now can relate to this on a personal level one way or another. Casually driving down the road and then suddenly, BOOM you hit a deer. Shockingly enough, around 50,000 deer accidents are reported each year in Michigan (1 in 80 people) causing people and companies a lot of doe… (deer joke). Michigan is in the top 10 states where you are most likely to hit a deer, which comes as no surprise. 80% of these accidents happen on two-lane roads between dusk and dawn, especially in wooded areas and near water. The worst crashes happen when the driver tries to swerve and avoid the deer. This can then cause a collision with another vehicle, tree, or other objects, which could then possibly cause the vehicle to roll.

Another contributing factor to a deer collision is distracted driving. This means there should be no texting while driving and also limiting eating while driving if at all possible. That chicken strip dinner can wait until you get home. You’re already trying to avoid a possible deer crossing the road, so there is no need for you and your chicken to cross with it. In other words, be attentive and have both hands on the wheel so you are ready for any possible scenario.

Now you’re probably asking, “Is this covered?” and if it is covered, “How is my insurance company going to cover for my unfortunate encounter with Bambi?”

Well friends, this is where comprehensive coverage comes out to play. Your comprehensive coverage will cover the repairs to have your vehicle fixed and put back where it was prior to your loss. However, you do have to pay your comprehensive deductible on this type of loss. Liability only coverage on your vehicle will not cover this.  Also, insurance will not cover the cost of your chicken dinner that was an unfortunate casualty in your ‘Vehicle vs Bambi’ incident. So, there you have it, folks. Here is a little breakdown of deer accidents in Michigan and how they are covered.
